Australian Open – Day Two Wrap

Stanislas Wawrinka made a successful start to the defence of his Australian Open Title after he beat Marsel Ilhan in straight sets. The fouth seed was joined in the second round by World number one Novak Djokovic who hardly looked troubled in Melbourne.

After a day of surprises in the ladies draw on Monday the majority of the seeds escaped an early exit on day two.

Gael Monfils fought back from 3-0 down in the fifth set to beat countryman Lucas Pouille that certainly tested the seventh seed who had to draw on all of his experience.

There were casualties in the men’s draw and today we said farewell to 16th seed Fabio Fognini, 25th seed Julien Benneteau, 21st seed Alexandr Dolgopolov and 27th seed Pablo Cuevas.

Serena Williams and Venus Williams both enjoyed their first outings in Australia with solid performances but the ladies draw again lost more of its big name players.

Andrea Petkovic (13) went down in three sets, Flavia Pennetta (12) lost to Camila Giorgi from Italy who reached the second round for the second time in her career.

Jelena Jankovic (15) who reached the semi-finals in 2008 was dumped out of the Tournament by Timea Bacsinszky who last won her first round match in 2008.

The road to glory continues on Wednesday morning.
