King of Surf Meets King of Ocean

Sunday July 19 2015, will go down as one of the most amazing days in the sporting world when three-time World Champion, Mick Fanning, came as close to death as one possibly can, when coming face-to-face with a shark in the Final of the J-Bay Open.

The incident took place at around 3pm during the Final of the South African leg of the World Surf League in Jeffreys Bay. Inconclusive reports of two Great White sharks surfaced at first, however it seems like there was only one which the size was unknown.

Thankfully no injuries whatsoever occurred, with only the ripcord being severed by the shark and a slight indent in the board.

Emotions were running high afterwards with all involved, mostly from Mick and fellow finalist Julian Wilson, who without thinking twice started paddling towards Mick as events unfolded to try and help his close friend and countryman.

Special thanks goes out to the Water Safety Team who were on the spot to help both surfers and scare away the shark within seconds of it all going down.

Below is the full video of what went down including interviews with both surfers as well as 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater, who watched on in horror from the beach after losing to Fanning in the semi-finals.
