Nelson Mandela Bay Surf Pro Draws Major Contenders
- Updated: March 15, 2018

Getting the 2018 City Surf Series underway, the Volkswagen Nelson Mandela Bay Surf Pro, presented by Billabong, a World Surfing League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) rated event, taking place over the Easter weekend, is fast approaching and with confirmed entries like WSL Africa Champion Nicole Pallet, locals Crystal Hulett, Joshe Faulkner and Steven Sawyer alongside entrants from Australia, Japan, Brazil, New Zealand and Europe, locals and out of towners alike have a lot to look forward to just from a contest point of view.
Making the event even more attractive, from a festival point of view, is the fact that it coincides with the annual Splash Festival which has been going for years and is a major crowd puller for the City over the Easter period.
The contest runs from Saturday March 31 to Monday, April 2 and will feature a mobile venue, shifting between Pipe and the wild side of the Nelson Mandela Bay coast to give surfers and spectators the best Nelson Mandela Bay has to offer surf wise.
Surfers will be fighting it out in the waves for valuable QS points that count towards their international ranking. The points last year’s star of the series, Michael February accumulated in the different City Surf Series events set him up for further success at the Ballito Pro and US Open of Surfing that ultimately saw him make it onto the prestigious Championship Tour (CT) where only best 34 surfers on the planet get to compete.
The Volkswagen Nelson Mandela Bay Surf Pro, presented by Billabong comprises a men’s QS1500, women’s QS1000, junior men’s JQS1000, junior women’s JQS1000 as well as Surfing South Africa (SSA) Longboarding men and women and SSA men’s and women’s stand-up padding (SUP) race events.
Against the backdrop of a full-blown surfing festival with music, food stalls and an all-round celebration of the surfing lifestyle and culture, fans can look forward to seeing the likes of Joshe & Angelo Faulkner, Dylan Lightfoot, Jordan Maree, Steven Sawyer, Sophie Bell, Crystal Hulett, and Kirsty McGillivray, to name a few, ripping it up in the surf.
