Oakley X Over 2017 – The Ultimate Test

The X-Brain-child of South African surfing legend and Oakley Sports Marketing, Events and Social Media Manager Seth Hulley, the Oakley X Over has become a premier multi-disciplinary sporting highlight of the year.

Born out of a desire to bring together sporting greats from every corner of the competitive map, to see who would come out tops as the supreme athlete, The Oakley X Over has called Jeffreys Bay home since its inception in 2014 with the event featuring Golf, Mountain Biking and Surfing as its proving grounds.

The inaugural champion of the event, that takes place during the Jbay WinterFest each year, was former Springbok and Sharks Flyhalf Butch James.

Twelve Months later, wildcard entrant and JBay local, Wihann Kotze surprised everyone by taking home the trophy ahead of James and one of South Africa’s premier cyclists – Kevin Evans.

The defending champion is eight-time Ironman victor, Raynard Tissink, after he came out tops over wildcard entrant from Australia – surfer Tom Whittaker, with the king and 2017 standings leader of the UCI Mountain Biking Downhill World Cup – Greg Minnaar taking home bronze.

All three men, as well as James, are back in 2017 to pit their athleticism against the most impressive field ever assembled for the event.

This year, Proteas living legends – AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn, 2007 Rugby World Cup winning Springboks – John Smit (who is back for a fourth year in a row), Schalk Burger and Bob Skinstad, Ultra Distance Giant and winner of the 2017 Western States 100 Mile – Ryan Sandes, two of South African Rugby’s speedsters current World Rugby Sevens player of the year – Seabelo Senatla and record holder for the most tries in a Test Match for the Springboks – Tonderai  Chavhanga, Surfing Legend – Jordy Smith and even KFM DJ and TV personality Ryan O’Connor among others, are all vying for the title of 2017 Oakley X Over Champion.

Powered by Sharp, this year’s event takes place from the 20th and 21st of July, starting with the 15km Mountain Bike challenge. Friday sees the competitors head to Lower Point beach for the highly competitive surfing portion of the contest before St Francis Links hosts the competition concluding nine-hole Golf event.

No matter who comes out on top, athletes and fans alike are sure to have a whale of a time.

Follow every moment of the action from Thursday through to Friday on the Oakley South Africa Facebook page LIVE as it happens.
