Soldierboy Steps Up to The Plate

Recently we got to chat with Garreth “Soldierboy” McLellan ahead of his debut UFC fight in Krakow, Poland.

Having regained his middleweight EFC Worldwide Title and retaining it with no effort, Garreth finally got the call he dreamt of for years from UFC after defending his title against Dricus du Plessis.

Garreth recalls his reaction when he got the call, “I was extremely happy with this but first I needed to follow all the channels to make sure the process went through smoothly, it was an amazing feeling as I was getting to live my dream but the excitement had to be put away so that I could start training for the biggest fight of my career.”

Garreth’s UFC six fight deal gets underway on Saturday 11 April in Krakow, Poland against Bartosz Fabinski who he had this to say about, “He is extremely tough. He has great top control and heavy hands, puts a lot of pressure on and has a good chin. He has a quick shot and is relentless on the takedown, all stuff we are preparing for.”

The man who will be fighting out of his Sunninghill, Fight Fit Militia MMA club has a tough season ahead of him as he explains how often his contract requires him to compete, “It will be anytime they want or when I feel I am ready for my next opponent, with me starting out fresh I will have to fight quite regularly if I want to reach the top.”

McLellan has opted not to move overseas for his new stint and will only fly over when required to compete while staying with his loyal and trusted coaching team who has helped him to the top in Africa.

With this new challenge Garreth is very aware that he will have to up his game higher than ever before if he wants to stay at the top and is ready for any challenge that will come his way along with his training, “It will intensify and we will all have to raise our game but as a team we understand what is needed and we are working to that. We have some amazing talents in our gym surround by excellent and smart coaches.”

Having gotten this opportunity, the EFC middleweight champion has set himself some amazing goals going forward, “I am looking to compete with the best in the World, I want to take South African MMA to the world and create an opportunity for the amazing talent that we have in this country to be able to do the same.”

Having recently got married with a young family this new chapter will surely having to travel all over the world will affect them or will they go along to all his fights? “They will travel where they can, it will be hard on us with travelling but we understand what this opportunity can do for our family so we are all on board.”

Like most things in life this chapter will come to a close some day, not soon we believe, but we were curious to know what Soldierboy’s plans for the future are after his fighting career, “We have our management company Soldierboy Management as well as some other projects lined up, I will look at some commentating and guest speaking and will also help with the growth of our team. I have many options and I am very blessed for that, I will of course spend a lot more quality time with my family as they are the ones who have given up the most by me following my dreams.”

We want to wish both Garreth and his team and family all the best for this new journey they going on and we will be following him closely as he puts South Africa on the map in this fat growing sport.
