Vodacom’s Makanjee Climbs for Caring4Girls Initiative

Nelson Mandela believed that education was the most powerful weapon to change the world and it’s a stance that Vodacom firmly supports.Vodacom has chosen, through its Vodacom Foundation, to wholeheartedly back the Caring4Girls initiative which focuses on keeping underprivileged girls in school during their menstrual cycle. Sadly, because of lack of access to feminine hygiene products and the stigma surrounding their monthly cycles, many girls miss up to 50 days of school a year completely unnecessarily.Vodacom’s Chief Officer: Corporate Affairs, Maya Makanjee, who also sits on the board of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, believes that as a woman in a leadership position, it’s important for her to show support for what these girls are going through and help to keep them in school. ‘Education, particularly for girls, is a cause which is close to my heart and this most natural of human functions is not a reason for them to miss out,’ she says.

On 13 July, a group of leaders and celebrities will be leaving SA on an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanajaro as part of Trek4Mandela. Their aim: to raise awareness and money for the Caring4Girls initiative. Maya will be part of this group and she’s looking forward to the challenge. ‘It’s going to be a challenge for my mind, body and soul, and I think it will be a humbling experience for all of us’ she says. ‘I’m passionate about the cause and determined to achieve the highest point in Africa, on Mandela’s birthday. He believed in literacy, respect and dignity and that’s exactly what the Caring4Girls project is all about.’

Vodacom provides coverage all the way to Mount Kilimanjaro, and Maya will be capturing her journey and sharing exclusive behind the scenes footage of the Trek4Mandela with her new Sony Xperia M4 Aqua, sponsored by Sony.

You can follow her on Twitter @MayaMakanjee and make a R30 donation by SMSing ‘MAYA’ to 42513. By entering, you could stand a chance to win your own Sony Xperia M4 Aqua in a lucky draw.
