2019 Vodacom Super Rugby – Round 5

The Yellow Cap and Couch Critic put their heads together in the aftermath of a weekend to select your SA  Vodacom Super Rugby team of the week. This week these rugby minds (as crazy as they are at times) combine to give you our SuperBru plays for Round 5 of the competition.

Friday 15 March 2019 – DHL Stormers vs Jaguares, Newlands 19:10*

After a humiliating start to the comp the DHL Stormers showed slow but steady improvement in their next two outings as they overcame the odds to beat both the Emirates Lions and Cell C Sharks. The DHL Newlands faithful welcome back their side for only their second home game as the Stormers return to action after enjoying a bye week.

The Jaguares opted for giving a few fresh faces a run against a young Lions team but this didn’t have the desired result for the South Americans. The Jags will again be without the influential Agustine Creevy but welcome back Pablo Matera and Bautista Delguy. The visitors will also hope that the changes in the frontrow sees an improved performance at scrum time.

Eben Etzebeth was huge on his return to starting duties last time out and further tweaks to the team in the form of Kitshoff, Ntubeni and Augustus can all be seen as positives for the Capetonians.

The Stormers are a different animal when playing in front of their home fans whilst the Argentines seem a whole lot tamer when not enjoying the home comforts of Buenos Aires.

PREDICTION: DHL Stormers by 6

Saturday 16 March 2019 – Emirates Lions vs Rebels, Emirates Airline Park 15:05*

The Rebels have been one of the surprise packages of the 2019 season thus far. The well-balanced Aussie outfit find themselves flying high with three wins from as many games. They have however not yet been tested outside the borders of Australia and a clash at altitude against an exciting young Lions team should prove to be a good test for their potential play-off credentials.

Dave Wessels is a cunning operator who has some star performers at his disposal. The coach, as well as some of the senior members of the squad, will be informing the entire Rebels squad regarding what to expect from an afternoon game on the Highveld against a Lions team with an appetite for running rugby.

It is one thing knowing what to expect from the adventurous Lions side but an entirely different thing stopping them from running havoc. We are leaning more toward this outcome than the alternative.
