J&B Met Menu Set to Dazzle Crowds!

It’s almost time for Cape Town’s annual horse racing gala event, the J&B Met at Kenilworth Race Course.  The Met is now in its 38th year and has only grown in stature and excitement since the inaugural event, most of all this year with the inclusion of the “Racing it’s a Rush General Access Village”.

Any Met-goer will know that the Met, while glamorous and fun, can be a long day of watching the races, talking, drinking and socializing, and so the food selection is of high priority to most people.

This year, Cape Town Food Trucks is the proud provider of some tasty meals to everyone at the event, ensuring that no one goes hungry and the festivities can continue into the night.

Vendors that will be selling their morsels at the race grounds this year include the following stars of the culinary scene. 

  1. Limoncello: for 12 years one of the best-loved and most consistent Italian restaurants in Cape Town, Chef Luca Castiglione wanted more mobility and so in 2012, started Cape Town Food Trucks using a refurbished 2nd-hand Dodge camper van.  Limoncello is Cape Town Food Truck’s flagship food truck and no event would be complete without its presence.
  2. Durban’s Finest Curry – Another pioneer of the local food truck scene, Vandiar’s Indian Cuisine is bound to run a queue from the start of the Met, so be sure to get there fast in order not to miss out on a spicy addition to your day,
  3. Chameleon: the most agile of the vendors; Chameleon has a large repertoire of food styles and ideas to suit each event, and will be sure to impress all Met guests on the day with their tasty food made with passion from quality ingredients and served by friendly people.
  4. Como Food Truck: serving custom-made Empanada’s, one of Argentina’s most traditional and popular dishes, Como Empanadas are the real deal. Each empanada is handmade locally based on authentic Argentine recipes collected directly from Buenos Aires. Great care is taken to ensure that each empanada is packed full of wholesome and natural fillings, using only the best and freshest of ingredients. 
  5. Sugary Sensations was born from of a love for all things sweet and unique. The treats on offer are all about creative, unique and yummy sweets, from cupcakes and cakes to desserts and milkshakes. This truck will undoubtedly add some sweetness to patrons on race day. 
  6. The Soft Machine: Chef Kobus van der Merwe has developed gourmet soft serve recipes for flavours ranging from Milktart with Cinnamon spice snaps to Sweetcorn and Tomato Jam.  A sweet treat that will astound the tastebuds!
  7. Shawarma Express ™ is a Middle Eastern fast food franchise offering Shawarma and Falafels based on old traditional recipes and promise towow the taste buds every time.
  8. Mr Calamari’s food truck will be serving their delicious calamari and fish-based meals for everyone with a hankering for some treats from the sea,
  9. “Stack That – fine street food” is a husband and wife owned company from South Africa and Germany that met whilst working abroad. After relocating to Cape Town from Berlin, “Stack That – fine street food” was created in December 2013 with the vision of bringing the experience of traditional street food to the locals.
  10. The Good Life serves fresh, fusion food at local hot spots.   The Good Life Food Truck made its debut on the second season of Masterchef South Africa and featured on Siba’s Table on the Food Network Channel in South Africa and the United Kingdom, and will add some diverse flavour to the dishes on offer. 
  11. Mon Ami – a little “French Afrik Bistro” on wheels was created by South African born Lucille and Frenchy (Florian) and represents their combined passion for food, people and travel.  Combining Lucille’s rustic Afrikaans cooking with Florian’s French flair to give patrons a unique culinary experience that can be enjoyed in various locations all over the Western Cape, and at the Met on 31st January. Bon Appetit!
  12. Ad Hoc Coffee was started in January 2013 by Alistair Wilson and business partner Elton Ross.  Elton (based in London), noticed how Artisan Coffee was appearing at markets, festivals and sporting events all over London.  To date, Ad Hoc Coffee has serviced many different events from weddings to festivals and are a preferred supplier to Seed Experiences, Rocking the Daisies and Felix Unite adventures.
  13. Rawsome Cafe was established in March 2014 with the intention of running a sustainable business and providing healthy fresh food to people in and around the Western Cape.  The business goal has always been to use local produce, supporting the small producer and using organic wherever possible. The menu has evolved with the business and now offers a range of tasty Mexican food as well as other favourites.

Made for the Mix is the theme for this year’s event so make sure to mix it up when planning your outfit.  Pursue the unconventional path by mixing different fashion styles together. Combine your colours vibrantly. Blend vintage with contemporary. Be bold and experiment with contrasting styles that compliments each other remarkably to create an ensemble that’s truly unique.
