5 December 2013, 20h50, a date and time forever entrenched in the world!
Some would call it the day the world changed for good, I would say the day we as respectable human beings were handed the mantle of humanity and self respect.
Deep words for someone like me if you know me in person, I know, but it’s the truth!
This day will forever be a day that I and every person should have on a calendar to remind us of the man in the mirror that always held himself accountable for others, yet always made a difference wherever he went.
This will be a day that every person, black or white, young or old must hold dear to their hearts and realise the big void the universe has left that only we can fill now.
I never got to meet or shake the hand of the man in the mirror, but for some reason he has touched my life without knowing as he did million others around the globe.
Would I have liked to meet him, yes! From the stories going around of how he inspired humans, I would not have minded a little bit of inspiration from this remarkable person. I would have liked to ask him who his local rugby and football team was and just banter with him like true sports lovers would. Hey, I would have even liked to have had a braai with the man.
Now he is gone and no one will ever get the chance again to know what these other selected few are talking about, but one thing is certain, we can all aspire to be more like he was and what he lived for.
I want to thank you Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela for changing the world we live in today!
I want to thank you for allowing us to enjoy sport the way we do!
I want to thank you for making all things possible for all!
I want to thank you for letting us all be equal to one another.
And I want to thank you for being part of me and my family’s life and for showing us what humanity is all about. May we fulfil your legacy till we also greet this worldly world someday?
Below is a full comprehensive video about the man’s life and times, enjoy!
