Van Staden Set to Punish at EFC 72

It’s time for EFC 72 and the excitement is palpable with the marquee fight at Cape Town’s Grand West Arena, which will see Lightweight Champion Martin “The Punisher” van Staden face American Dave “The Pain Train” Mazany but who is “The Punisher”?

Martin’s love for sport has a long history, having played club level rugby after finishing school, but was quick to realize that his size would be a hinderance in his quest for a professional sporting career.

Noticing that he has a natural talent at MMA, van Staden turned to the Octagon as his next port of sporting call with his 1st trainer – the late Kevin Thomas giving the now 35-year-old his nickname “The Punisher” for his ability on the canvas to “ground and pound” his opponents so much so that he would truly punish them.

Van Staden trains with world renowned coach Richard Quan out of Quan University in Sandton, Johannesburg and his drive to succeed and better himself in the sport has no bounds which is why he holds the EFC Lightweight Championship title having achieved 26 victories with 19 TKO or KO results from his 36 career bouts.

This week he faces submission favouring American Mazany and is leaving nothing to chance by surrounding himself with a top-class team that includes Quan and other top-class athletes in the world of Boxing and MMA: Don “Magic Man” Madge, JP Buys and Boyd Allen.

It has been a busy week for “The Punisher” with four MMA-training-specific sessions a day all geared for van Staden to “de-load” in order to make the official weigh-in on Friday, the day before the 35-year-old and Mazany meet in the fairest Cape.

It is all shaping up to be an exhilarating night of thrill a minute MMA action, not least because of what Martin “The Punisher” van Staden will bring to the Grand West Arena Octagon on Saturday night, so make sure you don’t miss it!

In recent developments, van Staden – a proud Skullcandy ambassador – has been drafted into Team Skullcandy War Rig, who will be part of the Red Bull Box Cart event taking place on 16 September 2018 on the slopes of Sandton Drive in Johannesburg.
